The Lore

Historically amethyst was associated with wealth, power and royalty. Purple dye was incredibly expensive, and amethyst looked beautiful on top of robes of many colors. It was also used on crowns

The ancient greeks belielved that the stone was dyed by Dionysus with wine. Forever ago there was a nymph named Amethystos, she rejected Dionysus. She wished to remain pure. The God of Fertility is not who you want around for that! Artemis, a virgin god, heard Amethystos freaking out so she turned her into a stone to protect her. Then Dionysus poured wine on the stone, dying it purple. This is likely connected to the ancient greek belief that it may prevent intoxication. It was often placed in fancy wine glasses for this purpose.
